Description

We are seeking applicants to register for our Waste Operative job bank. Vacancies exist on a supply, temporary and permanent basis.

As part of the online application process you will be asked the following:-

If your application is shortlisted, you will be invited to attend a recruitment session lasting approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes which will include the following:-

• Short Written Tests (40 minutes):-

1. Basic numeracy skills;

2. Knowledge of Health & Safety in the workplace;

3. Knowledge of basic road safety; and

4. Written communication skills

• Short Interview (20 minutes)

• Documentation checks and questions and answer session (15 minutes)

Following successful completion of the above application process/recruitment session, you will be placed onto our job bank for 6 months. You will be automatically considered for appointment to Waste Operative vacancies as they arise during this period.

You may be offered an appointment immediately, depending on suitable vacancies available at the time, however, it may take several months before a vacancy arises. Please note that Job Bank registration does not guarantee an offer of employment.

Your appointment will be subject to receipt of two satisfactory references.

Duties

  • Undertake, either individually or as a member of a team, duties concerned with sweeping, collection and removal of litter, dirt, leaves and weeds, etc from public spaces including roads, pavements and shopping precincts.  
  • Operate a range of associated tools and equipment including litter picker, barrow, shovel and brush.  
  • Remove household, industrial and commercial refuse including garden refuse, special uplifts and salvage operation from a variety of locations e.g. houses, shops, schools, etc. using the full range of refuse containers e.g. household bins, plastic sacks, wheeled bins, paladin bins etc.  
  • Uplift cardboard on commercial and industrial routes.
  • Walk distances on a route, push and pull loaded bins to the lorry lift on foot, load the bins on to the lift, operate the lift equipment, remove bins and return to their original location. Pull, push and carry heavy bulky items and equipment
  • Assist the driver in safe manoeuvring of the vehicle on the round or at the disposal location and give appropriate hand signals when directing the driver.  
  • Ensure the safe operation and road safety and awareness are performed when operating at the back of the vehicle.  
  • Ensure that safe working practices are adhered to and follow operating instructions for the lifts on the lorry to ensure that refuse is disposed of safely.  
  • Drive and be responsible for allocated vehicles, vehicle checks, required routine maintenance for example oil and water checks and cleaning, transport goods, equipment and personnel.  
  • Assist in the loading and unloading of the vehicles implementing safe manual handling practice and where necessary using mechanical aids and complete associated paperwork.
  • Provide cover and control public access at recycling centres.
  • Be responsible for recycling facilities at recycling centres where necessary and for opening and closing the centre.  
  • Maintain good working relationship between the service and members of the public by being polite and courteous at all times.  
  • Sweep or clear up any mess made by refuse collection.  
  • Report any damage, vandalism or disrepair to bins to the supervisor.

  • Willingness and ability to work outside in all weathers
  • Wear uniform  and  personal protective equipment (PPE) provided
  • Willingness to undertake training

Desirable criteria

  • Full, current driving licence with Category B entitlement
  • Full, current driving licence with Category C1 entitlement (medium size vehicles between 3500kg to 7500kg)
  • Full, current Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) driving licence with Category C entitlement
  • Valid Driver Qualification Card (DQC)
  • Valid Digital Tachograph Driver card
  • Experience of key holder and security duties
  • Experience of working in a waste management environment
  • Experience of maintaining equipment
  • Experience of assisting drivers with manoeuvres e.g. reversing, guiding through tight spaces
  • Experience of dealing with members of the public
  • Experience of driving Category C1 Class vehicles
  • Experience of driving Large Goods Vehicles (Category C Class)
