Based at Burgh Yard, Queenswell Road, Forfar.

You will work 37 hours per week, 5 days out of 7, Monday to Friday, between the hours of 7.00am and 7.00pm.


  • Undertake, either individually or as a member of a team, duties concerned with sweeping, collection and removal of litter, dirt, leaves and weeds, dog fouling etc. from public spaces including roads, pavements and shopping precincts.  
  • Walk distances on a sweeping route. Pull and push a street sweeping barrow, and carry and lift items and equipment on and off the barrow as required.
  • Operate a range of associated tools and equipment including litter picker, street sweeping barrow, shovel and brush.  
  • Maintain a good working relationship between the service and members of the public, by being polite, courteous and respectful at all times and upholding and strengthening the council’s values of fairness, equity, honesty and integrity.  
  • Sweep or clear up any mess made by refuse collection.  
  • Report any damage, vandalism or disrepair of street bins and un-attended public conveniences to the area supervisor.
  • Maintain designated routes and surrounding areas and ensure these are clean, tidy and free of litter and debris at all times.  
  • Empty and maintain litter bins on streets, open spaces and other designated areas as required.
  • Perform duties in a safe and conscientious manner following all training and instruction provided.
  • Ensure good road safety and awareness when working near to and crossing roads.  
  • Comply with Health and Safety at Work Act and other legal requirements, Codes of Practice, and established local authority procedures and safe systems of work.
  • Comply with all data protection law in the processing of personal, and special categories of personal data, in line with the council’s full privacy statement and service privacy notices.

Essential criteria

  • Willingness to undertake mandatory information governance training
  • Knowledge of basic road safety
  • Knowledge of health and safety at work
  • Experience of manual handling
  • Good oral communication skills
  • Good written communication skills
  • Good customer care skills
  • Basic numeracy skills
  • Experience of similar work (i.e. predominantly labour intensive)
  • Ability to work unsupervised
  • Ability to use own initiative
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to take and follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to pull and push a street sweeping barrow, and carry and lift items and equipment on and off the barrow as required

  • Willingness and ability to work outside in all weathers
  • Wear uniform  and  personal protective equipment (PPE) provided
  • Willingness to undertake training
