The Paediatric service areas, which includes the Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU), HDU and General Paediatric Ward (Ward 29) in Ninewells Children’s Hospital are seeking to appoint a number of Health Care Support Workers on fixed term contracts to support the activity within these areas during the coming months.


  • To carry out assigned duties to maintain hygiene,
  • order and safety within the environment specified in Section 4 below.
  • As part of a multidisciplinary team the post holder will carry out routine individual care duties for patients, clients, carers and relatives under the direction of the registered nurse.
  • The Post holder will work within the Paediatric departments assisting medical and nursing staff with families who attend.
  • The post holder may also be part of a HCSW team who work from different sites across NHS Tayside, Perth and Angus in community Paediatric Hubs carrying out venepuncture, weights, Blood pressure monitoring and ECG.
  • The post holder will promote and maintain safe, high quality and effective nursing care for children, young people and their families within the community setting, based on the values of the clinical group within the clinical governance framework. To maintain own personal and professional development encouraging innovation and practice development in conjunction with team members. 


Essential criteria

  • Working independently with limited supervision
  • Ability to plan workload and liaise with the multi-disciplinary team
  • Working with children with health care needs, often complex.
  • Previous experience working in a clinical environment or community setting
  • SVQ II or III in Childcare and Education or equivalent
  • SVQ III or equivalent
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to undertake the clinical role in a competent manner. e.g. measuring children
  • Good team player
  • willingness to participate in personal and professional development activities
  • Ability to work independently while motivating others


Desirable criteria

  • Supplies management
  • Competent at Venepuncture and other relevant clinical skills as described in the job description
  • Willingness to work toward HNC
  • Working with children with complex health care needs
  • Evidence of going professional development
  • Working knowledge of child protection
  • Working with children with complex health care needs
  • Willingness to contribute to service improvement
  • Ability to deal with sensitive information
